Introduction

The department of Instrumentation & Chemical Technology delivers two BTEC/Edexcel diploma programs in Instrumentation and Control Engineering and in Chemical Technology. In addition the department is responsible for the delivery of the Science module across all Engineering programs

The programs delivered by the department are as follows:
  1. Higher National diploma in Instrumentation & Control Engineering
  2. National diploma in Instrumentation and Control
  3. National diploma in Chemical Technology
  4. First diploma in Instrumentation & Control Engineering
  5. First diploma in Chemical Technology

The above programs are accredited by the Business & Technology Education Council and are delivered by fully qualified Instructors. The modules within each of the above programs have been carefully selected and prepared with the industry requirements in mind and are regularly updated to ensure their currency and relevancy to the ever changing advances in technology. In order to fully satisfy the vocational elements of the programs, the department has made available for the trainees, laboratories and workshops equipped with up-to-date training equipment and training aids that would cover all the outcomes required by each module within each of the programs.

In addition to the regular programs the department also delivers tailor made short courses and corporate programs as required by Industry.

Programs aim

The aim of our programs is to provide the trainees with skills, knowledge and attitude in the different disciplines that would prepare them for immediate and effective employment in industry.

Higher National diploma in Instrumentation and Control Engineering

This is a two-years program designed and prepared through consultation with industry and hence all the 19 courses within the program have been carefully selected such that the requirements of most industries are represented in the program. Trainees graduating from this program will be awarded the BTEC Higher National diploma from the UK and will be accepted for higher studies by universities in the UK and the USA. This program is offered in the evening only. The following are the courses taught in this program:

Modules Description
  1. Engineering Science
  2. The aim of this module is to investigate a number of major scientific principles, which underpin the design, and operation of engineering systems. It is a broad-based unit, covering both mechanical and electrical principles. Its intention is to give an overview, which will provide the basis for further study in specialist areas of engineering. It converts static and dynamic engineering systems, energy transfer in thermal and fluid systems, and application of single-phase AC theory, information and energy control system.

  3. Instrumentation and Control Principles
  4. This module is intended to give students an appreciation of the principles of Instrumentation. The module will also give students an understanding of the techniques used in Process Control and enable them to predict controller setting and make adjustments to achieve stability in such a control system.

  5. Microprocessor System
  6. The aim of this module is to provide the student with an understanding of microprocessor- based systems and their use in instrumentation, control and communication systems. It also involves writing programmes for microprocessor-based system and microprocessor interfacing.

  7. Project
  8. This Module develops students’ ability to use the knowledge and they develop either at work and/ oran engineering programme, to complete a realistic work project. It also contributes, if appropriate, to the requirements of engineering Application theme 2 The Module unit aims to integrate the skills and knowledge developed in order units of the course within a major piece of work that reflects the type performance expected of a higher technician at work.

    It is designed to being small groups of students together into a multi-disciplinary team, so that they can co-ordinate their individual skills and abilities. This allows them to develop the ability to work individually and with others, within a defined timescale and given constraints, to produce an acceptable and viable solution and agreed brief.

  9. Analytical Instruments
  10. This module concerned with modern techniques of detecting variables in industrial processes. The aim of techniques is to ensure that the measurement, or sampled quantity, is representative of the measure and The module also aims to develop an understanding of modern measurement principles and recognition of how these concepts applied in the design of commercial instruments fro the measurement of both analytical and chemical composition variables.

  11. Control Systems and Automation
  12. This module is intended to give students an insight into the principles of control engineering and how these principles can use to model engineering systems processes

  13. Plant and Process Control
  14. The aim of the module id to develop the students’ understanding of the need for and the means used to ensure effective control of Plant and Processes. In particular, the design to meet a specification using standard controllers is considered. An understanding of the limitations of standard controllers and the use of more complex control schemes is developed.

  15. Measurement and Testing
  16. The aim of this module is to develop student’s understanding concepts of measurement and test. In particular, the module is designed to develop the underpinning knowledge and skills required to perform complex measurement and test procedures.

National diploma in Instrumentation & Control

This is a two-years program offered for trainees both in the morning and evening. It contains selected courses designed to provide a trainee with the skills, knowledge and attitude to prepare him for employment as a technician in Instrumentation and control. Emphasis is placed on an integrated, student centered approach to learning. The program provides a wide range of subjects within the discipline, all of which are considered essential for the prospective technician. There are 21 courses in the program each of which has been carefully chosen with consultation with industry, and therefore, give our graduates maximum opportunity to enhance their skill and knowledge and hence better career growth. Graduates from this program can proceed to the Higher National diploma in the same discipline. The following are the courses taught in this program:

Modules Description
  1. Science
  2. This module aims to present underpinning knowledge of the fundamental science concepts and to give a basic engineering background for potential engineering technicians. This is accomplished through presentation of basic scientific laws and principles, investigating the behavior of simple linear systems, calculating the response of engineering systems to changes in variables, and determining the response of such systems to changes in parameters.

  3. Process Measurement
  4. The module is concerned with calibration and selection of a range of transducers and their application to the measurement of process variables.

  5. Industrial Control and Instrumentation
  6. The module aims at providing underpinning knowledge of the characteristics and basic principles of elements within control and instrumentation systems. It also develops skills and knowledge required in calibrating, testing, identifying and rectifying faults at control and instrumentation systems unit level. Use and interpretation of manufacturer’s specifications are also taught in this module.

  7. DCS, SCADA and Telemetry
  8. This module enables the trainees to develop a working knowledge and understanding of Distributed Control Systems (DCS) for process control, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Telemetry for remote plant applications. It addresses the limitations of conventional control systems and DCS capabilities to overcome these limitations. It also highlights the communications systems used in SCADA and Telemetry.

  9. Hydraulics & Pneumatics
  10. The module is concerned with the use of pneumatic and hydraulic systems of the control of plant. It includes the application of appropriate design techniques to device practical circuits for use in plant.

  11. Analytical Instruments
  12. The aim of this module is to provide a basic knowledge of the principles, methodologies and techniques that are used in non- conventional physical and chemical measurements in Petro- chemical and chemical industries. The module skills oriented toward how analytical instruments are used calibrated. It will also give trainees the opportunity to extend their knowledge of on-line analysis.

  13. Process Controller
  14. The module is concerned with the operation of process controllers and their function in process control systems. The leaner will develop skills in testing and adjusting controllers.

  15. Pneumatic Controllers
  16. The module is concerned with the maintenance and repair of pneumatic controllers forming part of a process control loop. The learner will distinguish between motion balance and force balance principles.

First diploma in Instrumentation & Control Engineering

This is a one-year program offered for trainees both in the morning and evening and provides the trainees with the required underpinning knowledge and work-related skills in the basics ofinstrumentation and control technology. Trainees will become familiar with the work environment through laboratory and workshop assignments and projects that are aimed at developing their vocational skills and prepare them for employment as assistant technicians in the field of Instrumentation. There are 11 courses in this program as follows:

Modules Description
  1. Science
  2. This module develops a basic knowledge of the concepts of matter, chemical reactions, static equilibrium, pressure linear motion, waves, energy, and electricity. The application of these concepts is to emphasize through experimental work in the laboratory that develops competence in the use of scientific knowledge and experimental techniques.

  3. Instrumentation and Process Measurement
  4. This module is intended to introduce students to the fundamentals of instrumentation and to the various physical principles and techniques used for the measurement of common process variables. Most of the learning support time will be devoted to practical work, which demonstrates principles of instrumentation. In all section, reference will be made to relevant application within the main discipline of the Programme. The module has eight sections.

  5. Introduction to Control Systems
  6. This module acts as an introduction for those candidates who may want to specialize in the filed of control technology. It provides the student with a survey of current technology and future trends in the filed of control engineering. In addition to introducing the concepts of control it includes some simple control strategies and applications.

  7. Hydraulics and Pneumatics
  8. This module provides an introduction to the pneumatic and hydraulic systems used for the control of an engineering plant. On completion, the student will be able to identify and test components, and be acquainted with some simple pneumatic and hydraulic circuits with emphasis on identification and location of faults.

    National diploma in Chemical Technology

    This is a two-years program offered for trainees both in the morning and evening. It contains selected courses designed to provide a trainee with the skills, knowledge and attitude to prepare him for employment as a technician in the chemical industry or related disciplines. Emphasis is placed on an integrated, student centered approach to learning. The program provides a wide range of subjects within the discipline, all of which are considered essential for the prospective technician.     Modules Description
    1. Chemistry
    2. This module introduces the trainee to the basic principles and concepts of physical, inorganic, and organic chemistry as they relate to and are applied in chemical technology. The trainee develops thepractical skills and builds up underpinning knowledge of the processes and materials that are used in chemical process industries

    3. Chemical Process Technology I
    4. In this module the trainee investigates the processes and materials that are used in a number of chemical process industries that are of local and regional importance. The module provides practical experiences as well as underpinning theoretical knowledge and the trainee are also able prepare different chemical products in the chemical laboratory.

    5. Fluid Flow
    6. In this module the trainee investigates the processes and fluids that are used in a number of chemical process industries that are of local and regional importance. The, module provides practical experience as well as underpinning theoretical knowledge and the trainee is able to select different types of pumps & fans which are used for transportation of fluid in chemical process industries

    7. Project
      1. This module develops students ability to use the knowledge and skills they develop at work and/ or on BTEC National Diploma programme to complete a realistic work project
      2. The module aims to integrate the skills and knowledge developed in other modules of the programme within a major piece of work that reflects the type of performance expected of a National Diploma graduate at work
      3. The module may be implemented either as the work of an individual trainee or as the work of a small groups of trainees working together in a multi-disciplinary team, so that they can co-ordinate their individual skills and abilities. The module requires the development of a piece of work, within a defined time scale and given constraints
      4. Plant Instrumentation and Control
      5. The module is concerned with the role of instrumentation in relation to the collection and evaluation of data associated with process monitoring and control. System control analysis will be confined to basic concepts.

    8. Chemical Kinetics
    9. In this module the trainee investigates the rate of chemical reactions which are involved in number of chemical process industry that are of local and regional importance. The module provides practical experiences as well as underpinning theoretical knowledge and the trainee is able to determine heat changes during the chemical reaction.


    10. Chemical Process Technology II
    11. In this module the trainee investigates the processes and materials that are used in a number of chemical process industries that are of local and regional importance. The module provides practical experiences as well as underpinning theoretical knowledge and the trainee is able to manufacture different chemical products in the laboratory.

    12. Unit Operation
    13. In this module the trainee studies and practices the principles of some unit operations: Drying, Absorption, Distillation, Extraction, Evaporation, Humidification. As well as practical and investigatory work, the trainee gains unpinning knowledge of those processes

    14. Heat and Mass Transfer
    15. In this module the trainee investigates the rate of heat and mass transfer for composite system in number of chemical process industries that are of local and regional importance. The module provides practical experiences as well as underpinning theoretical knowledge and the trainee is able to compare and contrast various heat transfer modes

    First diploma in Chemical Technology

    This is a one-year program offered for trainees both in the morning and evening and provides the trainees with the required underpinning knowledge and work-related skills in the basics of chemical technology. Trainees will become familiar with the work environment through laboratory and workshop assignments and projects that are aimed at developing their vocational skills and prepare them for employment as assistant technicians in the field of chemical technology.
